Natural Dye Class at The Ranch

*The event has already taken place on this date: Thu, 09/19/2024
Let’s spend a day learning how to create natural dyes from food waste and flowers! Together we will explore how commonly thrown out or composted food items and flowers that grow in Southern California can transform into vibrant eco-friendly dyes that bring new life and joy to textiles. This class will invite you to step into exploring the possibilities of botanical dyeing while simultaneously fostering a deeper connection with nature. Together we will explore each of the five steps of the dyeing process outlined below that will set you up for success so you feel confident to start on your botanical dyeing journey.

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

In this class we will be dyeing cotton socks. It is strongly recommended to bring a blank notebook that can be used as your dye journal to take notes during the class and as you continue on with natural dyeing.

Step 1: Preparing your dyeing space and weighing your goods

Step 2: Scouring (this is also known as prewashing your goods)

Step 3: Mordanting
